The name "ladybird" originated in Britain where the insects became known as "Our Lady's bird" or the Lady beetle.
译：“ladybird”的说法起源于英国，一开始叫 Our Lady’s bird 或 Our Lady’s beetle。
顺便说一下：这里的 Our Lady 是个专有名词，指“圣母玛利亚”。
Mary (Our Lady) was often depicted wearing a red cloak in early paintings, and the spots of the seven-spot ladybird (the most common in Europe) were said to symbolise her seven joys and seven sorrows.
译：因为圣母玛利亚早期的各种画像里，都身穿红色的斗篷（cloak），人们还认为最常见的七星瓢虫的七个斑点象征（symbolise）圣母的“七喜七悲”（seven joys and seven sorrows of Mary）。
看到这里，我总算明白了，圣母经常身穿红色斗篷，而瓢虫红色的甲就特别像圣母的红斗篷，于是人们就管这种昆虫叫 Our Lady’s bird (beetle) 了。
这个名字比较长，后来逐渐演变缩短为ladybird，在北美地区则变为 ladybug。
“颜色”真是神助攻啊，让这么个不起眼的小昆虫多了一个“神圣”的光环。
说到这里，我分享一个让人忍俊不禁的小插曲，我之前在微博也发了这个知识点，有同学这样留言：
她说 ladybug 是他最爱的 mac 的色号。
我就纳闷了，最新的 mac 电脑好像没有这么红的配色啊？便让她发个截图看看。
没想到她发来的是这个：

再说回到刚才的瓢虫：
我还特地查了一下维基百科刚才提到的圣母的“七喜七悲”（seven joys and seven sorrows）。
因为是英语语言文化科普号，宗教概念就不宜过多深地解释了，所以下面只罗列术语，感兴趣的可以自行再做研究：

秋葵是我爱吃的蔬菜，但我之前背过的英文是 okra，查了一下这个 lady’s finger，还真是秋葵：
我之前从未把秋葵联想成手指…老外这个“lady’s finger”脑洞简直太大…而且有毒，我估计我很快就会把 okra 忘记，只记得这个 lady’s finger 了…
不过我查了一下，这里的 lady 跟圣母就木有关系了，就是指“淑女”的意思，该短语把秋葵比喻成淑女的纤纤细指。
好玩的是，咱们中国也有一种类似手指的植物，我们还把它冠上了冠上了“佛”的名号：
对，就是“佛手”，英文叫 Buddha's hand，也很好记吧。
今天学了瓢虫、秋葵、佛手等冷知识，大家又可以在朋友面前 tree new bee了，爱不爱"侃英语"？
